Screen capture

January 18th, 2009 · 6 Comments

Before Christmas, I wrote a couple of postings about creating Word Clouds with Wordle.net (see here and here). I mentioned that one of the problems with the site is that although it allows you to print off the Word Cloud images, it doesn’t allow you to save them onto your hard drive.

If you want to save the images, you will have to use the Prt Sc (Print Screen) function on your computer. The Prt Sc button is usually found somewhere at the top right of your keyboard. It allows you to create a Screen Capture - effectively a digital photograph of whatever is displayed on your computer screen at any one time.

I have made a clip to show how to use this function:

In the clip, I said that for teachers, Screen Capture is a “really really fundamental tool to have”. This is a bit of an overstatement and not a point that I would like to argue with any teacher who was struggling to provide his or her students with the bare essentials. However, it can be a very practical tool for the classroom. On teflclips, I have posted a few lesson plans that make use of Screen Captures of YouTube videos (see here and here for example).

Have you tried MWSnap for taking screenshots?

I think it involves fewer steps as if you click on the option ‘Any Rectangular Area’ you actually avoid having to do any trimming later as you only snap the part you want instead of the whole screen.

Here is a link to it:

    Hello Glennie.
Hadn’t heard of MWSnap before. Just downloaded it. It’s going to take me a while to work out how to use it but it looks reall good. Thanks for that.

If you use the option I mentioned, it is fairly easy.
    The sequence is
    1. Open the software
    2. Open the page you want to snap
    3. Return to the software
    4. Click ‘on any rectangular area’ and then ’snap any area’
    5. You should then go back automatically to the page you want to snap and you will see that the thingumy is there that you use to establish how much of the page you actually want to snap.
    6. Once you have got that area established by some skilled dragging, it’s left click to take the phot0.
    7. You are then back to the software, where you can save to wherever you like, print etc . Don’t think I have ever explored all the options.

    Hope that helps.
